The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Cell of M S Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce (MSRCASC) was established to promote awareness, action, and accountability towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDG Cell serves as a dedicated institutional platform to integrate sustainability principles into academics, research, extension activities, and campus practices, in alignment with national priorities and global development agendas.

The SDG Cell aims to foster social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and inclusive development by encouraging interdisciplinary learning, community engagement, and student participation. Through structured programs, research initiatives, outreach activities, and partnerships, the Cell works to sensitize students and faculty to global challenges such as climate change, health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, and sustainable livelihoods.

Aligned with the UN Academic Impact (UNAI) principles, NEP 2020, and quality benchmarks of NAAC, the SDG Cell functions as a catalyst for translating global goals into local action. The NCC unit of M. S. Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce (MSRCASC) actively participated in a Community Outreach Program as part of the Bharat Environment Program during Earth Week 2026, in collaboration with Research Heights Foundation and EPTRI. The initiative was conducted at Kaiwara, Karnataka, with the aim of extending awareness and service beyond the campus and engaging directly with the local community.

As part of the Earth Week celebrations and sustainability initiatives at M S Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Bengaluru, a Sustainability Pledge Program was organized to create awareness among students and staff about environmental responsibility and sustainable living practices. The event was conducted under the guidance of the SDG Cell with active participation from faculty members and students across various departments.

During the program, participants collectively took a pledge to protect the environment by adopting eco-friendly habits such as waste segregation, reducing plastic usage, conserving water and electricity, promoting greenery, and supporting sustainable development practices within and beyond the campus. The pledge emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in addressing global environmental challenges and building a cleaner, greener future.

Event Type: Photography Competition

The Department of Microbiology, in association with the SDG Cell and IQAC, organized a Photography Competition on the theme “Chirps of Hope: Saving Our Sparrows” in celebration of World Sparrow Day 2026. The event aimed to raise awareness about the declining population of sparrows and the importance of conserving urban biodiversity.

The competition witnessed participation from students across various streams including B.Com, BBA, BCA, BA, B.Sc, M.Sc, and MBA, with a total of 9 participants actively contributing their creative entries.

Students captured compelling images reflecting the beauty, vulnerability, and ecological significance of sparrows in urban environments. The photographs highlighted themes such as habitat loss, coexistence with humans, and the need for conservation efforts. The competition encouraged participants to engage with their surroundings, observe bird behavior, and creatively document their perspectives through photography.

The SDG Cell, in association with the Department of Computer Applications and the Women Cell of M. S. Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce, organized an awareness program on “Women Empowerment and Gender Equality” on 5 March 2026 at Kuvempu Seminar Hall. The program aimed to promote awareness on gender equality, women’s rights, and the importance of building an inclusive and respectful society.

The session was attended by 120 students and faculty members. The resource person, Dr. Vani K. G., Assistant Professor at Ramaiah College of Law, delivered an insightful talk highlighting the importance of gender equality and the need to ensure safe and respectful work environments for women. She explained the provisions of the POSH Act (Prevention of Sexual Harassment at Workplace) and discussed the landmark Vishaka vs. State of Rajasthan (1997) case, which strengthened workplace safety and legal protection for women.

The session also highlighted the International Women’s Day 2026 theme “Give to Gain,” emphasizing collective responsibility in empowering women and promoting gender equity. The program successfully created awareness among students about gender sensitivity, legal rights, and the significance of building an inclusive and equitable society.

The SDG Cell of M S Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce organized the International Day of Climate Action on 24 October 2025, engaging 132 participants in a meaningful initiative focused on sustainability and environmental responsibility.

A key highlight of the event was the Terrarium and Miniature Garden Competition, which provided students with a creative platform to showcase eco-friendly ideas and innovative approaches to green living. The competition witnessed enthusiastic participation, with students designing visually appealing and sustainable miniature ecosystems that reflected awareness of biodiversity, conservation, and aesthetic landscaping. These activities not only encouraged creativity but also instilled practical understanding of environmental stewardship.

The event also featured an insightful session by Ms. Rashmi Kulranjan, Hydrologist at WELL Labs, Bengaluru, who spoke on climate change and sustainable practices. Overall, the programme effectively combined knowledge with creativity, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to fostering environmentally conscious individuals.

In observance of World Earth Day 2025, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, in association with the SDG Cell, NSS, and Eco Explorer Club, organized a comprehensive environmental awareness programme on 28 April 2025, aligned with the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” The programme aimed to foster environmental responsibility, sustainability awareness, and student engagement through creative and knowledge-based activities.

The celebration comprised two integrated sessions. The first session, “Paint for the Planet,” provided students with a creative platform to express their environmental concerns and commitment through visual art. Participants depicted themes such as climate change, plastic pollution, biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, water conservation, and sustainable living practices, highlighting the role of youth in environmental advocacy and stewardship.

The second session, an Eco-Literacy Session themed “Zero Waste Campus,” featured an expert lecture by Dr. Saumya Raghavan, environmentalist and sustainability advocate from SWMRT, Bengaluru. The session focused on practical strategies for waste segregation at source, composting, elimination of single-use plastics, decentralized waste management systems, and responsible consumption patterns, supported by successful case studies from Bengaluru. Students were encouraged to adopt sustainable habits and initiate peer-led environmental actions on campus.

In observance of World Mental Health Day 2025, the Department of Humanities, in collaboration with the Department of Research and Development, organized a week-long World Mental Health Week programme from 6th to 10th October 2025, aligned with the global theme “Mental Health in Humanitarian Emergencies.” The initiative aimed to promote mental health awareness, emotional resilience, and psychological well-being among college students through structured, interactive, and experiential activities.

The programme commenced with Stress-Free Monday, where students participated in relaxation-based activities such as balloon-based stress release and doodle wall exercises, encouraging mindfulness and positive emotional expression. Gratitude Wednesday focused on cultivating appreciation and emotional positivity through DIY gratitude cards and reflection notes, strengthening interpersonal relationships on campus.

As part of the World Mental Health Day observance on 10th October 2025, a guest lecture titled “Young Adults in a Digital World: Managing Screens, Stress, and Strengthening Mental Health” was delivered by Dr. Swathi C., MD (Psychiatry), Assistant Professor, Ramaiah Medical College.
