M S Ramaiah college of arts, science and commerce Students of the department of chemistry & biochemistry wins glory at Mount Carmel College.On the account of “world biofuel day” Mount Carmel college organized an inter college fest, Named ' biofuels for tomorrow ' which was held on 21st and 22nd August 2025. The events included were poster making and quiz on the topics related to biofuels.Team from M S Ramaiah college of Arts, Science and Commerce, 3rd semester M.Sc Organic chemistry comprising, Siddhi Shridhar Pardeshi, Krishna Chirag Shah and Sowmya A created an informative and creative poster which led them to win the 2nd place in the event.The event was very important as well as necessary for the students to know about the importance about the biofuels and importance to preserve our nature.

M.S. Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce Students Excel at CHEMOZ 2025, Christ University We are delighted to announce that students from M.S. Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Bengaluru participated in CHEMOZ 2025, organized by the Department of Chemistry, Christ University, on 19th and 20th September 2025. The event featured a variety of competitions, including Quiz, Alchemy Quiz, Catalyst Clash, and Lab Knockout. The team from M.S. Ramaiah College, comprising students from M.Sc Organic Chemistry 3rd semester, Lekshmi, Dimple, and Mythri, delivered an outstanding performance in the Alchemy Quiz, which led them to secure 4th place in the finals. CHEMOZ 2025 provided an excellent platform for students to showcase their knowledge, creativity, and problem-solving skills in chemistry, and our students’ achievement is a testament to their dedication and hard work.


Value added program

Value-Added Program (VAP) for Chemistry & Biochemistry PG Students.M.Sc Chemistry and Biochemistry students participated in a six-day (14/07/2025 to 19/07/2025) VAP at K2VR Analytical Research Pvt. Ltd., gaining hands-on experience across Microbiology, Wet Chemistry, and Instrumentation Labs. The program covered water quality testing, chemical synthesis, and analytical techniques like HPLC, GC, and AAS. A special session by Dr. K. J. Bala Subramani provided industry insights, career guidance, and placement tips. The initiative effectively bridged academic learning with industrial practices, enhancing students' technical and professional skills


Guest lecture

The primary aim of the lecture was to highlight how the model organism Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) has significantly contributed to our understanding of human physiology, disease mechanisms, and developmental biology. The talk aimed to bridge classical model organism research with modern biomedical applications

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry organized an insightful guest lecture on the topic "Exploring Human Physiology through the Lens of Drosophila Research" on 01/09/25. The event was part of our ongoing efforts to expose students to emerging trends in biomedical research and model organism studies. The lecture was delivered by Mr.Rounab Sarkar, a renowned researcher in the field of genetics, human physiology and molecular biology from Indian Institute of Science (IISc).


Orientation on Biocon-Ramaiah Quality Control Analytical (QCA) training program

Write up: Biocon-Ramaiah QCA certificate training program is one of the flagship programs through collaboration between Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, MSRCASC and Biocon Academy. This program started for batch-1 in the year 2019, and this year is for the batch-7 students the kick-off has been taken.

This program took place at the Biocon Academy and the opening ceremony key note address was given by Dr. Pushpa H, Principal, MSRCASC through online mode.

Both program coordinators including Dr. Vasanth K Bhaskara and Dr. Bharath K Devendra had joined the program through online.

On the launch day, there were several talks and events as pre-lunch and post-lunch sessions conducted.

Dr. Vasanth K Bhaskara, had taken orientation session of LMS for QCA batch-7 student trainees.

This program will be for next 8 weeks and ends in October, 2025 with the final summative exam and job drive for successfully completed trainees.


Industrial visit

The II Year M.Sc. Chemistry and M.Sc. Biochemistry students visited Merck Life Sciences, Jigani, Bengaluru, as part of their industrial visit. The visit offered an excellent learning opportunity through guided tours of the R&D labs of Chemistry, material science and oligonucleotides.Students were given a detailed overview of safety procedures, precautionary measures, and safety gears, followed in research laboratories. They also gained exposure to advanced instruments including HPLC, NMR, benchtop NMR, UV spectrophotometer, lyophilizer, FTIR, polarimeter, LCMS, microwave reactor, Production distillation unit, flow reactors.As part of the visit, the students had the opportunity to explore the large-scale production unit and the warehouse, which helped them understand industrial-scale manufacturing operations, material handling, and efficient storage and supply chain systems.The Merck team warmly welcomed and interacted with the students, making the sessions highly engaging and informative. Students not only enhanced their technical knowledge but also enjoyed the overall experience.The visit successfully coordinated by Dr. Pooja G Singh, Dr. Amreen Khanum and Ms. N D Jyothilakshmi proved to be both educational and inspiring, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world industrial practices.

We are proud to announce that Ms. Ananya S S, Ms. Ramitha E Singh, and Ms. Kounain, students of M.S. Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Bengaluru, successfully participated in the 48th Series of the Student Project Program (SPP) organized by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST). The event was held on 1st–2nd August 2025 at Jawaharlal Nehru New College of Engineering (JNNCE), Shivamogga.Their project, titled “Next-Generation Antimicrobial Polymer Nanocomposite Membranes for Advanced Biofouling Suppression and Proteinaceous Effluent Purification,” was selected for Poster Presentation under the guidance of Dr. Panchami H R and Dr. Bharath K Devendra.This program is supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Government of Karnataka, AI and Robotics Technology Park (ART-Park), Indian Institute of Science, and Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board.


Institutional visit

One day educational visit to Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Research - CeNS (an autonomous institute under Department of Science and Technology, Govt. Of India) Nelamangala, Bengaluru. One day educational visit was organized by the Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry for II Year MSc Chemistry students. The intention of the visit was to provide students with an exposure to the research facilities, working and applications of various instruments. In the morning the students attended two intriguing technical talks alongside fun activities followed by which they interacted with the distinguished faculty members of CeNS. In the noon, students visited the Materials and Energy lab, learnt about various instruments and engaged in discussions with the research scholars regarding the overview of their labs. The students thoroughly enjoyed, learned and had a great experience which has sparked an ambition of pursuing research in the young minds. The students were accompanied by Dr. Robin Wilson, Assistant Professor & Ms. N D Jyothilakshmi, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry

The workshop entitled “Workshop on Intellectual Properties Rights and IP management for startups” featured distinguished speakers, included Prof. Chandrasekhar S. Bajagur, Dean and professor [Retd] CUK, Karnataka, former employee of IISc, GE, Shell Tech centre Bengaluru, Karnataka and Dr. Tarakranjan Gupta, senior principal engineer, water innovation and IP strategy \, Exploratory and Innovation Vantive Healthcare limited. Participants included faculty members, researchers, entrepreneurs and PG life science and MCom students keen on understanding intellectual property from a strategic perspective. This program was coordinated by Dr. Hareesh P Kumar.

World malaria day

Write up: World Malaria Day 2025 was commemorated at SandhyaKirana Old Age Home in Bangalore with great enthusiasm. BSc IV sem biochemistry students along with Dr. Pooja G Singh and Dr. Shashidhar Bharadwaj conducted a free health checkup camp, providing essential medical care to the elderly residents. A key highlight was the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) for malaria, ensuring early detection and prevention. The event aimed to raise awareness about malaria prevention and promote healthy living among seniors. Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals worked tirelessly to provide quality care and support. The residents appreciated the initiative, and it was heartwarming to see the community come together for a noble cause. The event was a huge success, and we're grateful for the opportunity to serve. By spreading awareness and providing medical care, we strive to create a healthier community.

Chemistry (Organic Chemistry) students—Tarun Y, Sujith K P, Pallavi N, and Chandrakala P C—presented their research findings on the synthesis, antioxidant, and antibacterial activity of 4-[(4-cyanophenoxy)carbonyl]phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoate in a poster format. Their presentation took place at the One-Day International Conference on Science and Technology for a Sustainable Tomorrow: Innovation and Pioneering Breakthroughs, organized by the School of Natural Science, Adhichunchanagiri University, B G Nagara, Karnataka. World Earth Day 2025

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry in association with SDG Cell, NSS and Eco Explorer Club celebrated World Earth Day 2025 by successfully organizing a two-part environmental awareness event on 28th April 2025, comprising a creative art session titled “Paint for the Planet” in the morning and an informative Eco-Literacy Session in the afternoon. Both events reflected the shared commitment of the institution toward fostering environmental consciousness among students and faculty. Paint for the Planet segment of the event was designed to creatively engage students with the theme “Our Planet, Our Power.” The participants demonstrated both creativity and awareness, producing thoughtful and impactful artwork. The room became a lively hub of imagination and environmental advocacy, underscoring the important role young people play in shaping the future of the planet. The Eco-Literacy Session with the theme "Zero Waste Campus" was led by Dr. Sowmya Raghavan, an eminent environmentalist and sustainability advocate from SWMRT, Bengaluru. The session focused on empowering attendees to adopt responsible habits that contribute toward the vision of a clean, green, and self-sustaining environment. The program was coordinated by Dr. Pooja G singh Dr. Amreen Khanum, Ms. N D Jyothilakshmi and Mrs. Malini M R.


Institutional Visit

This event is a visit to Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences, Shivanapura, Bengaluru which is Department of Science & Technology (DST) institute, to have a research exposure and to experience the high-end equipment for M.Sc II and IV semester students of Biochemistry. There were total 36 student beneficiaries of this trip including two faculty from the department. Trip started from MSRCASC by college vehicle, reached on time by 10:20 am and after reaching all were taken to coffee/tea area to settle down in the amazing natural ambience. Lab visits were started immediately until 12:45 pm involving enthusiastic interactions by the PhD scholars at the centre who given a vivid explanation of the equipment. PG students also had so many questions, clarifications and ideas exchanged with them. Then there was CeNS sponsored lunch to all the students, faculty and driver at the canteen. Post lunch session included a lecture by Dr. Sanjay, CeNS giving the details of the scope of the research centre and explorable opportunities for students. Following the lecture, session was concluded with few words of vote of thanks by Dr. Vasanth K Bhaskara honouring them with memento along with student videos of feedback that were recorded. The complete program ended by around 3 pm and returned to MSRCASC after having group photo in front of the institute.

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry organized a Guest lecture on ”Use of Ultrasound in organic synthesis” on 09/04/25 from 11:00am to 1:00pm by Dr M.A.PASHA,former UGC-BSR Faculty fellow and former chairman, Bangalore university, at Kumempu Seminar HallMSRCASC. In his talk sir highlighted about, Using of ultrasound in organic synthesis, also known as sonochemistry, offers benefits like faster reactions, higher yields, milder conditions, and enhanced selectivity, making it a valuable & approach for organic chemists.


Free Health Check up camp

To commemorate World Health Day on 7th April 2025, the Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry and the National Cadet Corps (NCC) of M.S. Ramaiah College of Arts, Science, and Commerce - Autonomous (MSRCASC) successfully organized an extension activity, a Free Health Check-up Camp. The camp was held in association with M.S. Ramaiah Medical College Hospital, aiming to promote awareness about personal health and preventive care among students, teaching staff, non-teaching staff, and parents.

Write up: Value added program was conducted for MSc Biochemistry 2nd year students by Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in colloboration with Central Research laboratory, Ramaiah Medical College and Hospital entitled "Immunohistochemistry, Karyotyping and FISH Techniques" on 4th to 7th March, 2025, Coordinated by Dr. Vasanth K Bhaskara from RCASC and Prof. Clement Wilfred from RMCH. This program had motivated and enriched enthusiasm in students to learn and expose to practical applications of their theoretical knowledge. It was with full energy all the students had actively participated and acquired hands-on skills to convert biopsies into microscopic slides, flurescence and diagnostic karyotyping methodologies.

It was conducted in two sessions: Session 1: Job Opportunities and Carrer Growth: Your path to success and Top 5 Mahawin Techniques to Overcome Stress by Dr. Mallesha K, Founder Director & Scientist Mahawin, Bengaluru. Session-2: Master your day with Top 5 Time management Techniques and Resume writing by Mr. G M Kulkarni, Consultant and Corporate Trainer in leadership, personality development & a motivational speaker. Students took the benefit of it by interacting with experts.

2nd year MSc Chemistry students Ananya S S and Ramitha E Singh working under the guidance of Dr. Panchami H R has received the best paper presentation award for the paper titled “Niobium Oxide- Embedded polysulfone membranes: A Breakthrough in ultrafiltration for protein separation” at the 2nd International Conference on Applied Research in Engineering Sciences-(ICARES-2025) held on 20th & 21st February, 2025. The conference is jointly organized by the Department of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics & Humanities at Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru-560054.


National Science Day

National Science day was celebrated on 28th feb 2025. The guest of honour was Prof. Jayaraman Srinivasan, Former Chairman Divecha Center for Climate Change. He gave a talk on climate change its importance and consequences. As a part of National Science day celebration, on 11th of feb and 27th feb 2025 various activities were conducted for school kids and students of Ramaiah college for which prize distribution was done on 28th feb.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry conducted a workshop “Unravelling Molecular Secrets: Advanced Spectroscopic Techniques for Structural Elucidation” by the resource person Dr. Basavarajaiah S.M. (Ph.D., Post Doc from IIT Kanpur)Assistant Professor and Coordinator, PG-Department of Chemistry, Vijaya College, Bengaluru for MSc Organic Chemistry students on 13.02.2025 to provide an in-depth understanding of modern spectroscopic methods used in structural determination. The session aimed to bridge theoretical concepts with practical applications in research and industry.

A joint initiative by Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Sringeri, and Jyothi Institute of Technology. This workshop was coordinated by Dr. Bharath K Devendra and Dr. Panchami H R, for an incredible hands-on learning experience. The workshop, conducted in the Nanotechnology and Material Science Lab featured expert guidance from Dr. Kathyayini Nagaraju and followed by Research labs tour.

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry (PG), along with other Life Sciences PG programmes, proudly secured 3rd prize in the March-Past at the Annual Athletic Meet 2025 held at MSR Ground on 21 March 2025.

Our faculty members also excelled in various sports events. Dr. Tanisha Rathore delivered an outstanding performance, winning 1st place in Chess, 2nd in Table Tennis and Relay, Runner-up in Throwball, and 3rd place in the 200 mts. Dr. Pooja Singh secured the Runner-up position in Throwball, while Dr. Panchami H. R. achieved 2nd place in Chess and 3rd place in Javelin Throw.

Biocon-Ramaiah Quality Control Analytical Batch-6 and Syngene-Ramaiah Sterile Manufacturing Batch-1 Graduation day was happened on 10th Feb, 2025 at the Biocon Academy conventional hall. The chief guests of the event were Dr. Kiran Muzumdar Shaw, Executive Chair Person and Founder of Biocon academy and other Industrial and Academic professionals. Pragathi G S and Prathibha C- presented a review paper titled "Advancing Nanotechnology: Green Strategies for Metal Nanoparticle synthesis" at the International Conference on transcending frontiers in Chemical and Material Sciences held on Jan 23and 24th at NMKRV college for women, Jayanagar, Bengaluru. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Nandini S, the team explored eco-friendly approaches to synthesizing metal nanoparticles, emphasizing sustainability and their potential applications in various fields.

I and III Semester MSc Biochemistry students from Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, M S Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce-Autonomous participated an enriching One-Day Workshop on 09/01/2025 organized by CIIRC-Centre for Incubation, Innovation, Research and Consultancy, a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization recognized by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, GoI. A joint initiative by Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Sringeri, and Jyothi Institute of Technology. This workshop brought together 35 students and faculty members, Dr. Bharath K Devendra and Ms. Tanisha Rathore, for an incredible hands-on learning experience. The workshop, conducted in the Cell and Molecular Biology Lab and the Food Technology Lab, featured expert guidance from:Dr. Roopa Reddy (Cell and Molecular Biology), Dr. Ravikumar K. (Food technology). The students gained valuable insightsand practical exposure, enhancing their skills in Cell and molecular biology and food technology. Such workshops foster innovation, critical thinking and a sprit of research among budding biochemists.
