Value Added Program on “Bioinformatics”

Date: 6th to 11th February 2025

The UG Department of Microbiology, MSRCASC-Autonomous, successfully organized a Value Added Program on “Bioinformatics” from 6th to 11th February 2025. The program aimed to introduce students to the fundamentals of bioinformatics, enhance their computational skills, and provide practical knowledge of biological data analysis and database usage.

The sessions covered essential concepts and applications of bioinformatics, including sequence alignment, nucleotide and protein sequence retrieval from databases like GenBank, EMBL, and UniProt, as well as sequence similarity searches using BLAST and FASTA. Participants also learned to access and analyze 3D protein structures from the Protein Data Bank (PDB) and perform structural visualization using RasMol.

Interactive discussions, assessments, and practical exercises enabled students to apply the learned concepts effectively. Feedback from participants highlighted the clarity of instruction and the practical relevance of the skills acquired.

Overall, the program provided a strong foundation in bioinformatics, equipping students with both theoretical and hands-on experience to support future research and applications in this rapidly evolving field.

Value Added Program on Analytical Techniques in Bacterial Proteomics

Dates: 16-19 October 2024

The Department of Microbiology organized a Value Added Program on Analytical Techniques in Bacterial Proteomics for III-year B.Sc. students, with 29 participants taking part. The programme provided an integrated learning experience combining theoretical insights and extensive hands-on training in key proteomic techniques. Students were introduced to important bioinformatics tools for protein sequence analysis and structure visualization, followed by practical sessions on SDS-PAGE, Western Blotting, immuno-detection, and protein data interpretation.

The sessions, facilitated by experienced faculty members, helped students gain a strong foundation in modern proteomics methodologies and enhanced their technical skills for research applications. The programme concluded with an interactive discussion, assessment, and feedback session, enabling students to reflect on their learning and refine their understanding of analytical approaches in bacterial proteomics.

The valedictory program featured Dr. Yogesh Shouche, Director, SKAN Research Trust, Bengaluru, who delivered an insightful session on the significance of microbes and their conservation for a sustainable future.

International Microorganisms’ Day 2K24 successfully promoted scientific curiosity, appreciation for the microbial world, and the importance of conserving microbial diversity.

Value-Added Programme on "Microbiological Quality Control of Food, HACCP, and Food Auditing"

Dates: October 16–18, 2024

The Department of Microbiology, under the DBT-Star College Scheme, conducted a Value-Added Programme on "Microbiological Quality Control of Food, HACCP, and Food Auditing" from October 16–18, 2024. The programme provided students with hands-on training in biosafety, microbial analysis, food safety standards, HACCP, and food auditing. Expert sessions by Mr. Arvind (Dextrose Technologies Pvt. Ltd.) and MSRCASC faculty enabled participants to learn practical techniques for detecting microbial contamination, ensuring quality control, and maintaining food safety standards. The programme enhanced students’ skills and confidence to apply these practices in real-world food industry settings.
